4. Context Gives Meaning

In 1675, Christopher Wren was told by the Queen that his work of 35 years was “awful, artificial, and amusing”. What we would understand as criticism today was in his day the highest praise! To learn the context of a passage we must ask: Who is the author? Who is the audience? What is the date and social setting? And what language is being used?
